About this exercise

The Zercher carry is a loaded carry variation where a barbell is held in the crook of the elbows at waist height while walking. This unique position forces the biceps, upper back, and core to work together to stabilize the barbell, making it a challenging full-body conditioning and strength exercise. It is commonly used in strongman and powerlifting accessory training.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell on a squat rack at about hip height
  • Step in and position the barbell in the crook of both elbows, crossing your forearms to secure it
  • Lift the bar from the rack by straightening your legs and torso
  • Stand tall with a braced core, upright chest, and feet shoulder-width apart
  • Walk forward at a controlled pace, keeping the barbell close to your body and your spine neutral
  • Avoid hunching forward — keep your elbows lifted and chest up throughout
  • Complete the prescribed distance or time, then return the barbell to the rack safely
