Wide Plank Side Tap

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Wide Plank Side Tap.

About this exercise

The Wide Plank Side Tap is a core stability exercise performed in a wide-stance push-up position, where you alternately tap each hand out to the side while maintaining a stable plank. The wide foot placement provides a larger base of support, but the hand movement creates a lateral challenge that strongly targets the obliques and deep core muscles.

How to Perform

  • Begin in a high plank position with hands directly under your shoulders and feet wider than hip-width apart
  • Engage your core and glutes to keep your hips level and your body in a straight line
  • Lift your right hand and tap it out to the right side, returning it to the starting position
  • Keep your hips as still as possible and resist the urge to rotate
  • Lift your left hand and tap it out to the left side
  • Return the left hand and immediately move to the right side tap
  • Continue alternating in a controlled, rhythmic fashion
  • Breathe steadily throughout and avoid sagging your hips toward the floor
