About this exercise

The weighted standing neck extension uses a head harness to strengthen the posterior neck muscles in an upright position. Standing and leaning slightly forward, you extend the neck against the resistance of the weighted harness. This movement targets the neck extensors and trapezius for improved cervical strength and posture.

How to Perform

  • Attach the head harness and load it with an appropriate weight
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hinge slightly forward at the hips
  • Allow your chin to drop toward your chest in the starting position
  • Extend your neck by lifting your head upward and back against the resistance
  • Hold briefly at the top, then slowly lower your head back down under control
  • Maintain a neutral spine throughout — avoid rounding the lower back
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
