About this exercise

The weighted plates Bulgarian split squat with ring is an advanced unilateral leg exercise where the rear foot is suspended in a gymnastic ring while holding weight plates. The unstable ring surface dramatically increases the demand on stabilising muscles of the hip, knee, and ankle compared to a bench-supported variation.

How to Perform

  • Set a gymnastic ring at approximately knee height and stand a lunge-length in front of it
  • Hold a weight plate in each hand and place the top of your rear foot into the ring
  • Brace your core and keep your torso upright as you lower your hips straight down
  • Descend until your front thigh reaches parallel to the floor or your rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Drive through the heel of your front foot to press back up to the starting position
  • Control the instability of the ring throughout the movement
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
