Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Plate Toe Raise.

EasyShin

About this exercise

An isolation exercise for the tibialis anterior (shin muscle) performed by dorsiflexing the foot against the resistance of a weight plate balanced on the toes. Often performed seated with the heel on a raised surface, this movement directly strengthens the muscle responsible for pulling the toes upward.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a bench or chair with your feet hanging off the edge or your heel resting on a raised surface
  • Place a weight plate on the top of your foot, balancing it securely against your toes
  • Start with your foot in a plantarflexed (toes-down) position
  • Flex your foot upward (dorsiflex) by pulling your toes toward your shin as high as possible
  • Hold the top position briefly to maximize contraction of the tibialis anterior
  • Slowly lower your foot back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one foot, then switch to the other

About the Plate Toe Raise

The Plate Toe Raise is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
