About this exercise

A standing overhead press performed while gripping the edges or holes of a single weight plate. The neutral grip and circular shape of the plate increase shoulder stabilizer demand compared to a barbell, while the standing position also challenges core stability throughout the lift.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart and a slight bend in your knees
  • Hold a weight plate with both hands at chest level, gripping the sides or finger holes
  • Brace your core and keep your spine neutral
  • Press the plate straight overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Pause briefly at the top with arms locked out overhead
  • Lower the plate back to chest level with control
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
