About this exercise

A push-up variation in which a weight plate is placed on the upper back to add extra resistance, increasing chest, triceps, and shoulder activation beyond what standard push-ups provide. A training partner is recommended to place and remove the plate safely.

How to Perform

  • Get into a high plank position with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width and body in a straight line from head to heels
  • Have a partner carefully place a weight plate on your upper back between the shoulder blades
  • Brace the core to keep the hips from sagging under the extra load
  • Lower your chest toward the floor by bending the elbows at roughly 45 degrees from the torso
  • Stop when the chest is just above the floor
  • Press through the palms to push the body back up to the starting position
  • Have your partner remove the plate before resting
