About this exercise

A lat and chest stretch-and-strength exercise performed lying on a stability ball with a weight plate held overhead. The unstable surface of the ball engages the core and glutes to maintain a bridge position while the lats and serratus anterior control the sweeping arc of the plate.

How to Perform

  • Place a stability ball on the floor and sit on it, then walk your feet forward until your upper back rests across the ball
  • Keep your hips raised in a hip-bridge position, feet flat on the floor
  • Hold a weight plate with both hands directly above your chest, arms nearly straight
  • Brace your core and slowly lower the plate in an arc overhead toward the floor behind you
  • Feel a deep stretch through the lats and chest at the bottom position
  • Pull the plate back up through the same arc until it is above your chest
  • Maintain the bridge position and avoid letting your hips drop throughout
