About this exercise

A classic lat and chest exercise performed lying on a flat bench with a weight plate held in both hands. The pullover targets the lats, serratus anterior, and chest through a long arc of motion, making it an effective finishing movement for back or chest training.

How to Perform

  • Lie perpendicular or lengthwise on a flat bench with your upper back supported
  • Hold a weight plate with both hands, palms pressing against the inside of the plate
  • Extend your arms above your chest with a slight bend at the elbows
  • Brace your core and slowly lower the plate in a wide arc overhead toward the floor
  • Feel a full stretch through the lats and chest at the bottom of the movement
  • Pull the plate back up through the same arc until it is above your chest
  • Keep your hips down and avoid excessive arching of the lower back
