Weighted Neutral Grip Chin-Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Weighted Neutral Grip Chin-Up.

HardBicepsMiddle back

About this exercise

A challenging compound pulling exercise performed on a pull-up bar with a neutral (palms-facing) grip while wearing a weight belt or holding extra load. The neutral grip reduces wrist strain and places strong emphasis on the lats and biceps, making it an excellent progression for building back thickness and pulling strength.

How to Perform

  • Attach a weight plate to a dip belt or hold a dumbbell between your feet for added resistance
  • Grip the pull-up bar with a neutral grip (palms facing each other), hands shoulder-width apart
  • Hang at full arm extension with your core braced and shoulders slightly depressed
  • Pull yourself upward by driving your elbows toward your hips until your chin clears the bar
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your lats and biceps
  • Lower yourself in a controlled manner back to the dead hang
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
