About this exercise

The Weighted Lying Side Head Lift with a head harness is a neck-strengthening exercise performed lying on your side. The head harness allows weighted resistance to be applied to lateral neck flexion, building strength and stability in the neck muscles. It is commonly used by athletes who require neck resilience.

How to Perform

  • Attach the head harness securely and connect the appropriate weight
  • Lie on your side on a bench or flat surface with your head extending off the edge
  • Allow your head to lower toward the floor under the weight, feeling a stretch through the side of the neck
  • Contract the lateral neck muscles to lift your head upward as far as comfortably possible
  • Hold the top position briefly
  • Slowly lower your head back to the starting position
