About this exercise

The weighted lying neck extension uses a head harness to add resistance to the posterior neck muscles. Lying face-down on a bench with the head hanging off the edge, you extend the neck against the load provided by the harness. This exercise strengthens the neck extensors and improves cervical stability.

How to Perform

  • Attach the head harness and load it with an appropriate weight
  • Lie face-down on a flat bench with your head hanging off the end
  • Allow your chin to drop toward your chest in the starting position, keeping the rest of your body still
  • Extend your neck by lifting your head upward and back until your neck is fully extended
  • Hold briefly at the top, then slowly lower your head back to the starting position
  • Keep the movement controlled throughout — avoid jerking the weight
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
