About this exercise

The weighted hyperextension is a loaded version of the back extension performed on a hyperextension bench. Adding a weight plate or dumbbell to the chest increases the resistance on the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings for greater strength and hypertrophy gains.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the hyperextension bench so the pad sits just below your hip bones
  • Hold a weight plate against your chest and position yourself face-down on the bench
  • Hook your ankles under the foot pads and let your torso hang down toward the floor
  • Keeping a neutral spine, raise your torso until it forms a straight line with your legs
  • Squeeze your glutes and lower back at the top without hyperextending
  • Lower your torso slowly back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Weighted Back Extension

The Weighted Back Extension is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
