HardMiddle back

About this exercise

A chin-up variation that begins from a full dead hang and uses additional external weight attached via a dipping belt. Starting from a completely relaxed dead hang maximises the range of motion, increasing the stretch and recruitment of the latissimus dorsi and biceps compared to a standard weighted chin-up.

How to Perform

  • Attach a weight plate to a dipping belt around your waist
  • Grip the pull-up bar with an underhand (supinated) shoulder-width grip
  • Relax fully into a dead hang with arms completely extended and shoulders elevated
  • Depress your shoulder blades to initiate the movement before bending your arms
  • Pull by driving your elbows toward your hips until your chin clears the bar
  • Lower yourself slowly and under complete control back to a full dead hang
  • Allow a brief pause at the bottom before the next repetition
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
