About this exercise

A shoulder rehabilitation and strengthening exercise where you raise weights diagonally in the scapular plane with thumbs pointing upward, mimicking the posture of holding a full can. This position reduces impingement risk while effectively targeting the supraspinatus and middle deltoid.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a light dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Turn your thumbs to point upward and outward (full can position)
  • Keep your elbows straight throughout the movement
  • Raise both arms diagonally at approximately 30–45 degrees in front of the plane of your body (scapular plane) to shoulder height
  • Pause briefly at the top with your thumbs still pointing up
  • Lower your arms slowly and with control back to the starting position
