About this exercise

The weighted front plank is a progression of the standard plank in which a weight plate is placed on the upper back to increase the challenge to the core. Holding the plank position with added load strengthens the deep stabilizing muscles of the abdomen and spine far beyond what bodyweight alone can provide.

How to Perform

  • Have a partner place a weight plate on your upper back, or position it yourself before assuming the plank position
  • Get into a forearm plank position — elbows directly under shoulders, forearms flat on the floor
  • Form a straight line from your head to your heels, squeezing your glutes and bracing your core
  • Keep your hips level — do not let them sag toward the floor or pike upward
  • Breathe steadily and maintain the position for the prescribed duration
  • To finish, have your partner remove the plate, then lower your knees to the floor

About the Weighted Plank

The Weighted Plank is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
