About this exercise

A squat variation in which a stability ball is placed between your back and a wall, allowing you to slide smoothly through the squat pattern while holding an external load. The ball guides your movement and reduces spinal shear, making it an effective option for building quad and glute strength with reduced lower-back stress.

How to Perform

  • Place a stability ball between your lower back and a smooth wall and lean into it
  • Hold a dumbbell or weight plate at chest level or by your sides
  • Walk your feet forward until they are slightly ahead of your knees, hip-width apart
  • Lower yourself by bending your knees and hips until your thighs are parallel to the floor, letting the ball roll up your back
  • Keep your chest up, core braced, and knees tracking over your toes throughout the descent
  • Drive through your heels to return to the starting position
