About this exercise

The weighted captain's chair leg raise is an advanced abdominal exercise that adds external load — typically a dumbbell held between the feet — to the standard leg raise performed on a captain's chair station. The added resistance significantly increases the demand on the abs and hip flexors.

How to Perform

  • Mount the captain's chair by placing your forearms on the padded armrests and gripping the handles
  • Secure a dumbbell between your feet by crossing your ankles around it
  • Allow your legs to hang straight down and brace your core
  • Slowly raise your legs until they are parallel to the floor or higher, keeping the dumbbell secure
  • Pause at the top and squeeze your abs
  • Lower your legs in a slow, controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Avoid swinging or letting momentum take over
