Weighted Bag Walking Lunge

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Weighted Bag Walking Lunge.

About this exercise

The weighted bag walking lunge loads the classic walking lunge with a sandbag or similar weighted bag, held at the chest or draped over the shoulders. The unstable, shifting load of a bag engages the core and stabilizer muscles more than a fixed implement, making this an excellent choice for functional leg strength and conditioning.

How to Perform

  • Hold the weighted bag against your chest or rest it across your upper back and shoulders
  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and brace your core
  • Step forward with one leg and lower your back knee toward the floor in a controlled lunge
  • Keep your front knee tracking over your toes and your torso upright
  • Drive through the front heel to bring your rear foot forward into the next lunge step
  • Continue alternating legs and walking forward for the target number of steps or distance
