About this exercise

A weighted unilateral lower-body exercise in which you step sideways up onto a raised platform while holding one or two kettlebells. The lateral approach targets the outer glutes and hip abductors, and the kettlebell load intensifies the demand on the stepping leg and core stabilisers.

How to Perform

  • Stand beside a step or box holding a kettlebell in one or both hands, with one foot placed flat on the platform
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to push yourself up until both feet are on the platform
  • Stand tall at the top with hips fully extended, holding the weight steady
  • Slowly lower the trailing leg back down to the floor in a controlled manner
  • Maintain an upright torso throughout and avoid leaning excessively to either side
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
