Hex Bar Bent-Over Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Hex Bar Bent-Over Row.

MediumRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

The Trap Bar Bent-Over Row uses a hex (trap) bar to perform a rowing movement with a neutral grip, which reduces wrist and forearm strain compared to a straight barbell row. Standing inside the bar allows a more symmetrical pull and effectively targets the lats, upper back, and biceps.

How to Perform

  • Load the trap bar and stand inside it with feet shoulder-width apart
  • Hinge at the hips to bend forward until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, with a slight bend in the knees
  • Grip both handles of the trap bar with a neutral grip and allow your arms to hang straight down
  • Brace your core and retract your shoulder blades before initiating the pull
  • Drive your elbows straight back to pull the bar toward your lower ribcage
  • Squeeze your back muscles at the top of the movement
  • Lower the bar with control back to the starting position and repeat
