Toy Soldier Walk

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Toy Soldier Walk.

EasyHamstrings

About this exercise

A dynamic hamstring and hip-flexor stretch performed by kicking one leg straight up toward the opposite outstretched hand while walking forward, mimicking a marching toy soldier. The alternating kicks progressively warm up the posterior chain and improve hip mobility.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with arms extended straight out in front of you at shoulder height
  • Keeping the right leg straight, kick it up toward your left hand
  • Lower the right leg and step forward, then kick the left leg up toward your right hand
  • Keep your back straight and avoid hunching the shoulders during each kick
  • Match the kick height to your current flexibility — do not force beyond a comfortable range
  • Continue alternating legs for the prescribed number of reps or distance
