About this exercise

The sumo hip twist stretch opens the inner thighs and hips through a wide-stance squat combined with a rotating hip shift from side to side. It is an effective dynamic stretch for improving groin flexibility and hip joint mobility.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet wider than shoulder-width and toes pointed outward at roughly 45 degrees
  • Bend both knees and lower into a deep sumo squat, placing your hands on your inner thighs
  • Shift your hips to the right, dropping that side lower while straightening the left leg slightly
  • Hold the stretch briefly on the right side
  • Smoothly twist and shift your hips to the left, dropping that side lower
  • Continue rocking from side to side in a controlled manner
  • Keep your chest lifted and your back straight throughout
  • Breathe deeply with each shift to deepen the stretch
