About this exercise

A standing upright row performed with a stick or dowel, targeting the upper trapezius and lateral deltoids. Using a stick instead of a barbell makes it an excellent warm-up or corrective drill to rehearse proper elbow-led pulling mechanics without axial load.

How to Perform

  • Stand holding a stick horizontally in front of your thighs with an overhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Pull the stick upward along your body toward your chin, leading with your elbows flared out to the sides
  • Keep the stick close to your body throughout the movement
  • Pause when the stick reaches chin level
  • Lower the stick back to the starting position in a controlled manner
