About this exercise

A standing overhead press performed with a stick or dowel, used primarily as a warm-up, mobility drill, or movement-pattern exercise for the shoulders. The minimal load of the stick allows full attention on pressing mechanics, core stability, and overhead range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a stick horizontally at shoulder height in front of your chest
  • Brace your core and maintain a neutral spine
  • Press the stick directly overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Avoid excessive arching in your lower back as you lock out
  • Lower the stick back to shoulder height in a controlled manner
