About this exercise

A standing shoulder mobility drill using a stick or dowel to improve external rotation range of motion in the shoulder joint. By rotating the stick behind the back with straight arms, it gently stretches the chest, anterior deltoids, and shoulder capsule while reinforcing proper scapular mechanics.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a stick horizontally in front of your thighs with both hands shoulder-width apart
  • Raise the stick forward and overhead, keeping your arms straight throughout
  • Continue rotating the stick behind your back by externally rotating both shoulders
  • Hold briefly at the end range, feeling the stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulders
  • Reverse the motion, bringing the stick back overhead and down to the starting position
