About this exercise

A standing overhead press variation performed with a stick positioned behind the neck, targeting the deltoids and triceps while demanding significant shoulder external rotation and mobility. Using a stick rather than a barbell removes axial load and makes it suitable as a mobility drill or shoulder warm-up for those with adequate range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart and position a stick behind your neck, resting across the top of your shoulders
  • Brace your core and keep your torso upright throughout
  • Press the stick overhead by extending your arms until they are fully locked out above your head
  • Avoid excessive forward lean or lumbar hyperextension at the top
  • Lower the stick back behind your neck in a slow, controlled manner
