About this exercise

The step-up on chair is a simple unilateral lower-body exercise that uses a sturdy chair as an elevated platform. Stepping up engages the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings of the working leg while also challenging balance and single-leg stability.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a sturdy, stable chair placed on a non-slip surface
  • Place one foot firmly on the seat of the chair
  • Press through the heel of the elevated foot to drive your body upward, bringing the trailing leg up alongside
  • Stand fully upright on the chair with both feet
  • Carefully lower the trailing leg back down to the floor with control
  • Follow with the lead foot to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs, or alternate legs each rep
