About this exercise

A bodyweight shoulder and upper back exercise where you hinge slightly forward at the hips and raise both arms overhead into a Y shape, activating the rear deltoids, lower trapezius, and rhomboids to improve posture and shoulder health.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hinge slightly forward from the hips, keeping a neutral spine
  • Let your arms hang in front of you with thumbs pointing upward
  • Keeping your arms straight, raise them up and out at roughly 45 degrees from your midline to form a Y shape overhead
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together and downward at the top of the movement
  • Hold briefly at the top, then slowly lower your arms back to the starting position
  • Maintain the forward hip hinge throughout the set

The Standing Y-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
