Standing Supinated Face Pull (with Towels)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Standing Supinated Face Pull (with Towels).

MediumRear shoulders

About this exercise

A bodyweight rear-delt and upper-back exercise performed by anchoring a towel at head height, gripping with a supinated (palms-up) hold, and rowing your face toward the anchor point. The supinated grip externally rotates the shoulders and places greater emphasis on the rear deltoids and rotator cuff.

How to Perform

  • Anchor a towel securely around a sturdy post or rack at approximately face height
  • Stand facing the anchor, grip one end of the towel in each hand with palms facing up (supinated)
  • Lean back slightly so your body is at an angle, arms fully extended, and feet hip-width apart
  • Brace your core and keep your body in a straight line from head to heels
  • Pull your face toward the anchor by driving your elbows back and out to the sides
  • Externally rotate your shoulders at the top so your fists finish beside your ears
  • Pause briefly at peak contraction, squeezing the rear delts and upper back
  • Slowly extend your arms back to the starting position under control
