About this exercise

The standing side crunch elbow to knee is a bodyweight oblique exercise performed in an upright position. You simultaneously raise one knee to the side and lower the same-side elbow toward it, creating a lateral crunch motion. Standing oblique work also engages the hip abductors and challenges balance, making it a functional alternative to floor-based side crunches.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart, hands placed lightly behind your head and elbows wide
  • Shift your weight onto one foot and slightly bend the supporting knee for balance
  • Simultaneously raise your right knee out to the side and lower your right elbow toward it
  • Crunch your obliques to bring the elbow and knee as close together as possible
  • Slowly return both the elbow and the knee to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching, or alternate sides each rep
