About this exercise

The standing plate press is a simple chest exercise performed by pressing a weight plate forward from chest level with both hands. The smooth surface of the plate requires constant squeezing pressure from both palms, which intensifies chest activation and makes it a useful finisher or warm-up movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a weight plate at chest height with both hands, palms pressing flat against the sides of the plate
  • Squeeze the plate firmly inward throughout the entire movement to maintain tension on the chest
  • Brace your core and keep your shoulders down and back
  • Press the plate straight forward until your arms are nearly fully extended
  • Pause briefly at full extension, then pull the plate back toward your chest under control
  • Avoid shrugging your shoulders or leaning forward as you press
