About this exercise

A standing lunge-based stretch that targets the hip flexors (iliopsoas and rectus femoris) by stepping one foot forward and lowering the hips toward the floor. Squeezing the glutes on the rear leg intensifies the stretch at the front of the hip.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart
  • Step one foot forward into a staggered lunge stance, keeping your back foot flat on the floor
  • Lower your hips toward the floor by bending the front knee to approximately 90 degrees
  • Keep your torso upright and your front knee aligned over your toes
  • Squeeze the glutes of the back leg to increase the hip flexor stretch
  • Hold the position for the desired duration, feeling the stretch at the front of the rear hip
