About this exercise

A standing calf stretch that lengthens the gastrocnemius of the elevated leg. Stand facing a flat bench, rest one foot on it with the leg kept fully straight, then hinge forward from the hips and reach toward the toes. Because the knee stays extended, the stretch targets the gastrocnemius rather than the deeper soleus.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright facing a flat horizontal bench
  • Place one foot on the bench with the heel down and the leg fully straight
  • Keep that knee locked out to isolate the gastrocnemius
  • Hinge forward from the hips and reach both hands toward the toes of the elevated foot
  • Gently draw the toes back and lean in until you feel a stretch in the calf
  • Hold the position, breathing normally
  • Release and switch legs
