About this exercise

The Standing Cat-Cow Stretch is a mobility exercise performed upright that flows between spinal flexion and extension, loosening the lumbar and thoracic spine without requiring floor space. It is an accessible warm-up or cool-down drill for the entire back.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and a soft bend in the knees
  • Place your hands on your thighs and hinge slightly at the hips
  • Round your upper back toward the ceiling, tucking your chin and tailbone (cat position)
  • Hold briefly, then reverse by arching your lower back, lifting your chest and tailbone (cow position)
  • Move slowly and fluidly between the two positions
  • Breathe out as you round into cat and breathe in as you arch into cow
