About this exercise

The Standing Behind-Neck Press is a barbell shoulder exercise performed with the bar lowered behind the head rather than in front. It places significant stress on the deltoids and requires notable shoulder mobility and flexibility; it is an advanced movement that should only be attempted with a properly warmed-up shoulder complex.

How to Perform

  • Set a barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height and step underneath it
  • Position the bar across your upper traps, just below the base of your skull
  • Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with an overhand grip
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, core braced, and back upright
  • Press the bar directly upward until your arms are fully extended overhead
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the bar under control back to the starting position behind your neck
  • Keep your torso vertical and avoid excessive forward lean throughout the lift
  • Perform only with adequate shoulder mobility; stop immediately if you feel joint pain
