About this exercise

The standing balance side to front leg raise is a unilateral bodyweight mobility and stability exercise in which the working leg is first raised out to the side, then swept forward, all while balancing on the standing leg. It strengthens the hip abductors, glutes, and hip flexors while improving single-leg balance.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall on one leg with the other foot lifted slightly off the floor
  • Brace your core and fix your gaze on a point ahead for balance
  • Raise the lifted leg directly out to the side to hip height, keeping it straight
  • Lower the leg slightly, then sweep it forward until it is in front of the body at hip height
  • Lower the leg back to the starting position under control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
