MediumQuadricepsCalves

About this exercise

A unilateral lower-body exercise that combines a split squat with a heel raise at the top of each rep, adding a calf activation element to the movement. The heel raise at the top also shifts greater demand onto the quadriceps and challenges single-leg balance and stability throughout.

How to Perform

  • Stand in a split stance with one foot forward and one foot back, toes of the rear foot on the floor
  • Keep your torso upright and brace your core
  • Lower your rear knee toward the floor by bending both knees
  • Descend until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your front foot to return to standing
  • At the top of the movement, raise your front heel off the floor for a brief calf contraction
  • Lower your heel back down and immediately begin the next repetition
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
