About this exercise

A foundational Pilates stretch performed seated on the mat with legs extended. The movement articulates the spine into a deep forward curve, lengthening the entire back from tailbone to crown and gently stretching the hamstrings.

How to Perform

  • Sit tall on the mat with legs extended straight, slightly wider than hip-width, toes flexed
  • Extend both arms forward at shoulder height, palms facing down
  • Inhale to grow tall through the spine
  • Exhale and scoop the abdominals inward as you round forward, reaching fingertips beyond your toes
  • Allow the head to drop and feel each vertebra curve and lengthen
  • Hold at the end range and feel the stretch through the entire back
  • Inhale and slowly stack each vertebra back up to the tall seated starting position
