About this exercise

The Smith Machine Sumo Squat is a compound lower-body exercise performed with a wide stance on a guided barbell. The wide foot placement shifts emphasis onto the inner thighs and glutes while the Smith machine provides stability and allows you to focus on depth and control.

How to Perform

  • Position the Smith machine bar across your upper traps and stand with your feet wider than shoulder width, toes turned out 30–45 degrees
  • Unrack the bar and stand tall with your core braced and chest up
  • Push your knees out in line with your toes as you descend by bending at the hips and knees simultaneously
  • Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor, keeping your torso upright
  • Drive through your heels and push your hips forward to return to the starting position
  • Re-rack the bar after completing all reps
