About this exercise

The Smith Machine Sumo Deadlift is a wide-stance hip-hinge movement performed on a Smith machine. The fixed bar path provides stability, allowing you to focus on loading the glutes, hamstrings, and inner thighs with reduced lower-back stress compared to a conventional deadlift.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to just below knee height and stand behind it with a wide sumo stance
  • Point your toes out at 45 degrees and position the bar over your mid-foot
  • Hinge at the hips, push your knees out in line with your toes, and grasp the bar with a shoulder-width grip
  • Brace your core, take a deep breath, and unrack the bar by rotating the safety hooks
  • Drive through your heels and push your hips forward to stand tall, keeping the bar close to your legs
  • Lock out your hips and knees at the top without hyperextending your lower back
  • Hinge at the hips again to lower the bar back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the target number of reps
