About this exercise

The Smith machine standing shoulder press is an overhead pressing movement performed in a fixed vertical plane, allowing you to focus on shoulder strength without worrying about balance. Standing engages the core and lower body stabilisers more than the seated version, making it a great compound shoulder builder.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on the Smith machine to upper-chest height and position it in front of your body
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, unrack the bar and hold it just above your upper chest with an overhand grip slightly wider than shoulder-width
  • Brace your core and maintain a neutral spine throughout the movement
  • Press the bar directly overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the bar under control back to the starting position
  • Keep your elbows slightly in front of the bar path and avoid excessive lumbar arch
