About this exercise

The Smith Machine Standing Military Press is a shoulder-building compound movement performed standing with the barbell guided by the Smith machine. The fixed bar path reduces the need for stabilising muscles compared to a free-weight press, letting you focus on pushing strength and shoulder development.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to upper-chest height, load the appropriate weight, and stand facing the bar
  • Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with an overhand grip
  • Unrack the bar and position it at the top of your chest just below your chin
  • Brace your core and keep your chest tall with a slight natural arch in your lower back
  • Press the bar straight overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Lower the bar back down to upper-chest height in a controlled manner
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps, then re-rack the bar
