About this exercise

The Smith Machine Standing Calf Raise is a calf-strengthening exercise performed with the barbell resting across your upper traps on the Smith machine. The fixed bar path lets you safely load heavy weight while focusing entirely on a full range of motion through the calves.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to shoulder height, place a weight plate or step under your feet for extra range, and load appropriate weight
  • Position the balls of your feet on the edge of the plate with your heels hanging off
  • Unrack the bar and rest it across your upper traps, feet hip-width apart
  • Lower your heels as far toward the floor as comfortable to feel a deep stretch in your calves
  • Drive through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
  • Pause briefly at the top to maximise the contraction
  • Lower your heels slowly back to the stretched position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps and re-rack the bar
