About this exercise

The Smith Machine Single Leg Split Squat is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed with the rear foot elevated on a bench and the barbell guided by the Smith machine. It intensely targets the quadriceps and glutes of the working leg while the machine's fixed path provides stability and allows you to focus on depth and range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to shoulder height, place a bench behind you, and load appropriate weight
  • Unrack the bar and position it across your upper traps, then take a step forward into a staggered stance
  • Rest the top of your rear foot on the bench behind you
  • Brace your core and lower your rear knee toward the floor by bending the front knee
  • Descend until your front thigh is parallel to the floor or your rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Drive through the heel of your front foot to press back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
