About this exercise

The Smith Machine Shrug is a trap-building exercise performed on the Smith machine, allowing you to focus purely on elevating the shoulders without worrying about bar balance. The fixed path of the machine helps you overload the upper trapezius with heavier loads safely.

How to Perform

  • Set the bar on the Smith machine to about hip height and load the appropriate weight
  • Stand facing the bar with feet shoulder-width apart, grip the bar just outside hip width with an overhand grip
  • Unrack the bar and let it hang at arm's length in front of your thighs
  • Keep your arms straight and drive your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible
  • Hold the top position for a brief pause to maximise the contraction
  • Lower your shoulders slowly back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps, then re-rack the bar
