About this exercise

The Smith machine seated calf raise targets the soleus muscle of the calf by performing the raise from a seated position. Sitting bends the knee, which de-emphasizes the gastrocnemius and isolates the deeper soleus for maximum development of calf thickness.

How to Perform

  • Position a bench inside the Smith machine and sit on it facing the bar
  • Place a step or weight plate under your feet so your heels can drop below the platform
  • Lower the bar across your lower thighs, just above the knees, and unrack it
  • Let your heels drop down to achieve a full stretch in your calves
  • Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
  • Hold the peak contraction briefly and squeeze your calves
  • Slowly lower your heels back down for a full stretch before the next rep
