About this exercise

A tibialis anterior strengthening exercise performed under the Smith machine bar, standing with heels on the floor and lifting the toes upward against the resistance. Reverse calf raises are often neglected but improve shin strength, ankle stability, and balance between the front and rear lower leg muscles.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to shoulder height and step under it, resting the bar on your upper traps
  • Stand with your heels flat on the floor and feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing forward
  • Unrack the bar and stand upright
  • Keeping your heels on the floor, raise the front of your feet as high as possible by flexing the ankle (dorsiflexion)
  • Pause at the top, feeling the contraction in the shins
  • Lower your toes back to the floor with control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
