About this exercise

A unilateral calf raise performed under the Smith machine bar while standing on the floor. The fixed bar path provides stability and allows precise load management, making it easy to add progressive overload to single-leg calf training.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to a comfortable shoulder height and step under it, resting the bar across your upper traps
  • Stand on one foot with the ball of that foot flat on the floor; hook the free foot around the working ankle
  • Unrack the bar and find your balance
  • Lower your heel toward the floor to achieve a full stretch in the calf
  • Drive up onto your toes as high as possible and squeeze the calf at the top
  • Lower slowly back to the stretched position
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch legs
