Smith Machine Low Bar Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Smith Machine Low Bar Squat.

About this exercise

The Smith machine low bar squat places the bar lower on the upper back — across the rear deltoids — allowing a slight forward lean that engages the glutes and posterior chain more heavily than a high-bar squat. The guided bar path provides stability so you can concentrate on depth and hip drive. It is a solid option for building overall leg and glute strength.

How to Perform

  • Set the bar at shoulder height on the Smith machine
  • Position the bar low across your rear deltoids, not on the neck; grip just outside shoulder width
  • Unrack the bar and step your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width with toes turned out
  • Brace your core and maintain a slight forward lean throughout the descent
  • Push your knees out and descend until your thighs reach at least parallel to the floor
  • Drive through the full foot, leading with your hips, to return to standing
  • Keep the bar path vertical and controlled on both the descent and ascent
  • Re-rack the bar safely at the end of your set
